Focusing on the Foreground and Hyperfocal Distance - TBA - 9am - 2 Hours
n a well composed photograph, one of the key components is a strategically placed element in the foreground. One key advantage to using prominent foregrounds is that it gives the viewer a sense of being there, that one could walk right into the scene. A great foreground will introduce you to a scene, and help the image to come alive. You will learn how to get the whole picture in focus? How do you add depth to a photo? Where do you focus to take a picture? Plus so much more. Understanding about hyperfocal distance will you decide which parts or depth of the background will be in focus.

We have a different photo theme bimontly and the two hour sessions take place in different outdoor locations around Sacramento. It's a great opportunity to try something new with the guidance of a professional photographer, and come away with some new shots for your portfolio or album.

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

What’s involved? Each session starts with an introduction to the theme, and the photography instructor will chat about the camera settings and techniques to use. You’ll then have time to take lots of photos, with the instructor present to answer any questions. You’ll receive feedback and have a chance to chat with everyone to share tips and ideas. We’re a social bunch!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

We also occasionally hold more formal beginners classes which last 3 hours and are limited to 6 people. These classes are perfect for complete beginners who want to start using manual mode and those who want to brush up on the basics. See the dates below.

Understanding a Light Meter and Histograms - TBA - 9am - 2 Hours
As a photographer, understanding your histogram is extremely important to improve the quality of your images. The information contained within the histogram is a graphical representation of the pixels exposed in your image. By understanding this information contained within the histogram, it can help with the settings that you use in the conditions you are photographing under. Understanding how to use a light meter works in conjunction with histograms and we will discover how to use these, both as hand held light meters and the light meters found within our camera.

Photographing Historical Buildings - TBA - 9am - 2 Hours
Many historic buildings were not built with the light aspects found with modern buildings. Windows were often small and poky so the light coming through could be in narrow shafts causing chaos for your camera's exposure system. There are many details in and around the building waiting to be explored. You'll be surprised at the stone carvings present on the exterior walls that you miss at a quick glance. Join us as we discuss the historical building of Seattle.
